I still need your help!!

Once again, just a reminder that the deadline for "Planet Eigo" art submissions is May 27th (next week). If you have prepared anything it would be great if you could start sending it in soon.

Here are some specific requests for worksheet illustrations:

- Aboriginal Australians – anything Australian-y would be good
- Mexico art – Sombrero, beaches, tacos, chilies, dancing, soccer, pyramids
- An illustration of Martin Luther King
- An illustration for the idiom, "She was all ears while the teacher was talking."
- 2 six-panel comic strips (3 x 2), each comic containing 1 or 2 empty speech balloons.

Let me know if you want to tackle any of these. It would be a great help!
Otherwise anything that can be thrown down to jazz up a page of text would be great.

Keep in mind:

- This is an educational book aimed towards teachers.
- It is a book of lessons for teaching 'English as a Foreign Language.'
- It's for teaching levels ranging from elementary to high school.
- Inside content is black and white (with tone).
- Deadline is May 27th.

Please send me anything you can and I'll love you forever
Remember that all contributing artist will have your name and website printed in the book so please send me that information as well!!

Email submissions or questions to acgalaga@gmail.com

Thanks so much!!

Travel Memories

Wed Jul 29, 2009, 6:00 PM
Maido

Some of you may know that I am in the USA.  This is a little dated, but here are a few observations of my travel from Osaka, Japan to Philadelphia, USA.

Upon entering the terminal at the airport, it is shocking being able to overhear everyone's conversations in English.

Once at the airport (in Osaka, especially in Tokyo), if you're white, no one will speak to you in Japanese nor will they understand your Japanese.

On the airplane, why do people want that nozzle blowing that dry air in their faces?

In flight meal; I asked for the soba and she didn't understand me. I was then forced to say "noodles."

I was also forced to eat my soba with a fork! It was so bizarre having to twist my soba up like spaghetti.

In America, at the security checkpoints, homeland security mus treat EVERYONE as a potential enemy. Different feeling from the security of other countries where you feel like they want to help you instead. I'm sure this kind of mentality really wears on the minds of the security guards and their perception of people.

Once in America, during my layover in LA, my ticket that was printed in Tokyo was a little different than it was supposed to be(?). At the boarding gate in LA, the man who checked the tickets reaction was a wonderful greeting back to the US. He repeatedly said, "Stupid fucking idiots!" because they don't use those tickets anymore. I told him the ticket was printed in a different country. "They're still fucking idiots! They should have known better." There wasn't any problem scanning the ticket. It actually worked perfectly. Americans... *sigh*

Finally back to Philadelphia...

They lost my luggage.

All Sorts of Crazy!!

Hmm... A little over a month since my last journal.

Gotta get better at updating since this is currently my only form of blog.

I've been taking my time putting up this next image upload. I am a little nervous since one of them is an Avatar: the Last Air Bender fan art. You may or may not know that I rarely produce fanart for popular TV shows. I think there was an Azula pic I did a while back and it is my most favorited pictures.  Sure, I like the show, but I enjoy making up my own characters.

Other than that, been working on GenkiFace 4 (still!)... Should be printed soon, so I'll let you all know once it is so you can peek at some of the art or sweet talk me into sending you one via air mail.

Also, in less than 2 weeks I'll be taking a vacation to the USA! I've been there several times over the past year, but this time finally feels like a vacation. Not to say it's not going to be weird. I'm sure I'll enjoy myself, though.

Peace all!  I'll keep in touch!

Hmm... Haven't been updating much.  Been through a major depression.  Still riding it out but feel much better.

Just uploaded a few things from my sketchbook.  Most of them ended up in scraps, though.  Here's the links to them.

GenkiFace 4 is still in production.  Need to finish some details and put the thing together.  It's been incredibly difficult sometimes. My head is flooded with so many thoughts, it's so hard to concentrate.  But, I believe I'm getting over that now.

I'll be sure to update you soon on the progress of my zine (that is what I've been mostly working on).

Hello all!

Haven't really been able to have much computer time since my last computer died a hardcore death and I was computerless for about two weeks.  That doesn't count for all the pain and anguish it pt me through prior to its death.

So as of yesterday I am now the owner of a new MacBook!  :boogie:

In a bit of time I shall have it set up where I can create art and do my desktop publishing!!! :w00t:

Until then, I send my hellos to you add will keep in touch.

Love ya!!

-- Please don't tell me anything for I haven't seen the 4th movie yet, but the more I watch the Futurama movies the more I feel like it's messing everything up!  I do enjoy the movies and are really excited about watching them, but the paradoxes it creates messes with some of my favorite episodes.

To all my friends and loved ones,

Thank you for all your support.  Your responses to my last journal entry is greatly appreciated.  It's hard to say goodbye sometimes.  Let's all pray this isn't the last time I have to say it to my dad.

Anyways, I'm now back in Japan trying to get back into the swing of my job while scraping together submissions for the newest issue of my zine, GenkiFace.

Going back to Japan

Fri Jan 9, 2009, 8:25 PM
Maido

Tomorrow morning I head back to Japan for I don't know how long.

I don't care to get into details at the moment, but I am going through the hardest time in my life.

Today was my last day in the USA and my father spent the entire day in bed drifting in and out to fox news.  I went in and sat with him for an hour here and there. My family and I just had him out in the living room to take some pictures.  He's now back in bed for the night.

Tomorrow morning I have to leave at 6am to go to the airport.  He wants us to wake him up before I go so he can say goodbye...  And that will probably be the last time I'll see him alive.

I'm so glad I made this trip and I am very happy the be fortunate enough to spend this time with my father...  But I don't think I'll ever be ready enough for what is to come.

Happy New Year to all my wonderful friends out there.

Currently I'm hangin' out in South Jerzy, USA.
Yes, we spell Jersey with a "Z" in these parts.

Still no access to a scanner nor Photoshop for that matter.  In the meantime I'm trying to get my GenkiFace submissions as close to complete as possible so I can keep the computer work to a minimal.

Look for GenkiFace issue 3 in mid-January.  (We'll have a banner soon enough so you can click on it)

Hope you all have made resolutions for this new year.  A lot of crazy stuff went down in 2008.  Thus more-so this year than any other, 2009 feels like a fresh start.

I need to quickly jot down my resolutions before the clock strikes twelve, but a few are as follows:

- Be a man of action.
- Draw every day.
- Write every day.
- Meditate
- Cook more often.
- ...

I best be writing these down.

Best wishes to all in the upcoming year.

Love ya,

-Alan

今晩は my comrades!!

It's been a while since my last journal update, and even longer since any image updates.

So, I've been drawing, but being that it's the end of the term there's been so much work to do for school, as well as my own studies.  Last weekend I went to Kyoto and took the 3級 Japanese language proficiency test.  I've certainly learned a lot of Japanese and the test was a lot of fun, but I'm not sure I've learned enough for Japanese to pass the 3級.  We'll see come February when the results are mailed out.

On the thoughts of drawing.  Been seketchin' things and working on my magazine.  Recently I've taken to sitting around the train station and jotting down some gestures of people millin' about.

Also, Chrono Trigger DS has been sucking up my soul!!!

But, as for uploading stuff;  In due time.  I have a bi-weekly fight with my computer every time it crashes and I have to re-install everything from scratch.  Photoshop only get's installed sometimes.  I have yet to ever re-install word this time.  Kinda poopie really.

Right now, I'm coloring some pictures while watching "the Parent Trap." Not that re-make.  The old one from the 60's.  Great film!  Makes me all cry and cry like a little girl.  Especially when their mom and dad get back together at the end...

BTW: Flying back to the states for a few weeks to celebrate X-Mas with the family.  If your in the New Jersey, New York, Philly area give me a holla and we'll it up some coffee shops!

Rant on the Net!

Tue Oct 7, 2008, 5:35 AM
Maido

Since I'm a loner I need someplace to rant about this!

I read the book "Breakfast at Tiffany's" by Truman Capote a while back and found it quite amazing.  Holly Golightly had such life for only being black text on paper.

Ever since reading that book I've always been curious about the movie.  Often people would tell me how wonderful it is.

Recently, I rented the DVD from Tsutaiya and just got around to watching it this evening.  The scenes would come to life in my mind again, reminiscing about the fun time reading that book.  It also brought back memories of the girl Holly reminded me of.  For the most part, the movie was dead on when depicting the book... until it ended.  Couldn't Hollywood handle the poetic heart break?

Ah... whatever.  It wasn't the ending I was expecting.

Yesterday, I found 一万 on the side walk.  That's badass!  (it's equivalent to finding a $100 bill)

Does it make up for all the bullshit I have to go through for my job?

On the 27th and 28th of this month, I'm packing up all my shit and moving to Nabari.

It's a real pain in the ass, especially since it's only a few days before I take my vacation to the USA.

When I return to work in September, I have to commute to my old city 3 times a week by train.  It's about an hour 1 way.

Not to mention, there are so many great people I've met over the past year and I'll be seeing them a whole lot less.

It's the Japanese way, I guess.  They hear someone's doing a good job and reward them by giving them way more shit to do.

A quickie

Tue Jun 10, 2008, 7:33 PM
Maido

Hello my friends,

I'm typing this up quickly before I run off to class.

Finally, my computer is fixed!!  Thanks to my family who mailed my system discs so I could do a compete reformat.

Not having a computer for a few weeks kinda stinks.  It was worse at first, panicking and trying all kinds of things to fix it.  Stressing out because the time wasted attempting to fix it should have been spent prepping lessons... which I couldn't do because my computer wouldn't work.

After a while, I got along just fine.  I could hop on and check e-mail through safe mode or use a school computer to do any printing.  After taking away the internet, one begins to see how it can be addictive.

It's nice to have my computer back though, I missed being able to use Photoshop and work on art digitally.

About my art: I've been sketching a bit, but nothing really finished.  I have a few things to do for a Zine that probabbly won't be put on this page.

Also, I'm making it my fall equnox resolution to start selling my art.  This summer I'm going to  focus on how sell my illustrations and how much to sell them for.

It has dawned on me to do this being that, every time I show my work to random people, a frequent response is, "How much?"

So, more art stuff is to pop up on this page soon enough.  Therefor, please stay tuned!!

I hate regretting shit, but...

Sat May 10, 2008, 4:30 AM
Maido

Awe man!  It's been almost a month since I've posted anything!!!

Life has been full of busyness since school has started again.  I want to draw more, but there's work (which no one else seems to have) and I really want to learn Japanese.  That on-top of practicing guitar, it's often quite difficult to make 'finished' art projects.

Life has been filled with its ups and downs, like normal.  Recently though I've been feeling an overwhelming sense of loneliness.  There's a horrible lack of affection in my life.  I often blame myself for this, for I am an incredibly depressing an boring person.  (and one should not be so self negative!!!)

I went on a date.  I don't know how to date girls!  We chatted and walked around a park.  I had a good time and she said she did too...  but that was that.  Nothing special and never to happen again I guess.

When I was in the USA I at least had my cats.  When I was feeling lonely I'd give them a big squeeze and they'd get all purr-ful.  I was thinking of getting a plant or something, but I have the feeling that a plant won't give the same affection as my cats.

Hooray for sob stories!  I'm getting older, uglier, and stupider!!!  There's so much to look forward to!!!

Been playing some video games...  umm...  Yesterday I bitched out a Miyazaki movie because the day was saved with the power of love.  Maybe if you've got a girl wrapped around you, one may enjoy the movie ("Ohh, the movie was so pretty and beautiful, let's make out!").  I found it silly and a little depressing.  If the day was saved with the power of rock and roll, I'd feel differently about the whole thing.

If you have, thanks for reading my sad little rant.

Love you all,

-Alan
